Radioactive Lens - Are They Dangerous?
I got 'Asahi Super-Takumar 50mm f1.4 Fast Lens - Pentax M42' and have been reading that they contain a bit of radioactive material is it harmful? I read its only harmful if you look into the lens for ages and ages but I'm not sure.. Does it contaminate other things and your camera? Also where is a good safe place to store them when their not getting used? It came with a metal lead box and I keep it in their will this make it safer to store?
People nowadays get all scared as soon as they read the word "radioactive". There is a bit of radioactivity all around us at all times, and some things are naturally more radioactive than others. E.g. lumps of coal, depending on the mine where it's from. Or the luminous elements in wrist watches.
Don't worry about it. If it weren't safe, then those things couldn't be sold legally. Just store it in that lead box (ok, that indicates that there is a bit more radioactivity than in other materials) and it should be ok.
Or, if you worry about it, then just skip it.
