Is the bili light safe for me?
My newborn son has to be under a biliriubin light that the doctors arranged to have brought to our house. He has to be under it at all times except feedings, diaper changes, etc. Is it safe for my wife and I to be next to him (and thus partially under the light ourselves) while we monitor him?
It's perfectly safe. I'm a NICU nurse and I'm always partially under these photo-therapy lights . Do not just put your child in the window as the other poster suggested (this is acceptable under situations when the biliruben level is slightly elevated) but your baby must need the photo-therapy lights and usually they drop off a "bili-blanket", which the baby is placed on and a regular blanket can be wrap around the baby and the "bili-blanket"....then the light won't be as bright to you. It will only be temporary. Good luck...
