Why is quartz used in a halogen lamp?
The light given off by a fluorescent lamp is not directly given off by a filament like in a light bulb.
Instead, the electricity that flows through the lamp causes the vapor inside to produce ulraviolet
light. Then, in a secondary step, the ultraviolet light is absorbed by the phosphor coating inside
the bulb and re-emits this as visible light. Thus, the phosphor coating is essential in order to have
visible light with a fluorescent lamp.
A halogen lamp operates at higher temperature and pressure than a traditional incandescent lamp.
Quartz is used because it can withstand both the higher temp and pressure better than standard
silicate glass.
