Should I use a tripod while photographing animals using a full zoom on a 18-200mm lens?

When should I use a tripod? I will be photographing animals using a 18-200mm lens. I have VR but would a tripod make my photos a lot better for enlargements?

Generally, a tripod is always better than hand-held, assuming it's possible. Especially zoomed in. A small motion by you means a pretty large shift at the end of your zoom.

Like the other person said, turn off VR when using a tripod.

EDIT:
I just remembered the rule I learned many moons ago when starting out: "If your shutter speed is slower than the reciprocal of the focal length of your lens, you must use a tripod."

So if you're using a 200mm lens fully zoomed, and you're shutter speed is going to be 1/125th of a second, use a tripod. Realistically, on digital cameras, there's a factor of 1.5 or 1.6 on the focal length, so a 200mm lens is really the 35mm equivalent of a 300mm lens.
